Two short Stage Plays Reflecting Australian Pakistani Cultural Interaction

“this is a revelatory new production...a fine revival of a great classic” (The Australian on N&A)

“Never underestimate the power of difference” is the theme of playwright Alex Buzo’s famous story about a middle-aged Aussie ‘bloke’ and a young, articulate Muslim uni student from Pakistan. Norm and Ahmed is now a set text for the Higher School Certificate in NSW and its unexpected climax gives the play new shades prophecy given the recent mistreatment of international students at Australian universities.

Buzo’s story of racial and cultural conflict are re-ignited with the premiere of a brand new play by award-winning playwright Alana Valentine, written especially as a companion for
Norm and Ahmed. Her new play Shafana and Aunt Sarrinah is a thoroughly 21st century story of two Australian Afghani Muslim women and the tension within a family over the young woman’s decision to wear the headscarf. Based on personal interviews with a large number of Muslim women from a diversity of Muslim cultures in Sydney, the play is about the ignorance and misunderstanding that surrounds the wearing of the traditional Muslim headscarf.

This is exciting and entertaining live theatre. It aims to ask questions, encourage self-reflection and foster a greater respect for individual and cultural differences. It is of vital importance to The Alex Buzo Company that the communities represented on stage are also represented in the audience. The company warmly invites all ethnic communities in greater Sydney to book their tickets to see one of the performances at the Seymour Centre from 5th-29th
August 2009.
